The Branch (Tree Nursery Plantation & Forest Restoration) is responsible for collecting and storing tree seeds for future planting and forest restoration activities. It establishes and manages tree nurseries to produce seedlings for reforestation and forest development and distributes these seedlings to local communities and other relevant stakeholders to support tree-planting and forest restoration activities.
The branch also collects and conserves endangered tree and flower species to support biodiversity conservation and the protection of plant species. In addition, it provides support to community forests for tree planting, forest restoration, and sustainable forest development activities. The branch also establishes herbal and firewood plantations to promote the sustainable use of medicinal plants and fuelwood while reducing pressure on natural forests.
Each year, the Branch coordinates and supports Kawthoolei Tree-Planting Month, celebrated throughout July, to encourage communities to participate actively in tree-planting and forest conservation activities. This annual initiative provides an important opportunity to strengthen cooperation and relationships between local communities, KNU authorities, and the Kawthoolei Forestry Department (KFD). It also contributes to forest restoration, biodiversity conservation, and climate change mitigation by increasing tree cover and supporting the long-term restoration and protection of forest ecosystems.
